Bathing a cat is an important hygienic procedure. It should be carried out systematically, but not often, since the animal is quite independently able to cope with maintaining the purity of the coat. There are several steps that all pet owners should be aware of. It is worth noting immediately that a cat having health problems is not recommended to bathe, as this can aggravate its position.
What detergents can I use?
It is not easy to choose a detergent, because today in any veterinary pharmacy or any similar store a wide selection of different shampoos is presented. You should not take the first one that comes to hand, considering that it is not important for the animal what exactly they will wash it with. An improperly selected shampoo can cause the hair to fade, get shredded, and the skin will dry out, which will cause itching and discomfort. Do not experiment on a cat, achieving silky coat through expensive shampoos, but designed for human hair. This is also fraught with certain problems, because the acidity of the hair in animals and humans is different.
Practice shows that you should not trust cheap shampoos that do not wash well, foam, rinse off. It is better, of course, to trust the means of professional series. Their consistency is highly concentrated, and therefore for a quality cat wash it will take just nothing. Moreover, the cat’s coat will receive the necessary nutrients. If necessary, such shampoos may contain insecticidal substances that fight against insects that inhabit the wool, but you should not get carried away with such products often.
Before you bathe a cat, you should cut its claws. Then you need to examine her hair. Lumps that have gotten together in felt should be cut and not tried to straighten, as this can cause the animal pain and unnecessary anxiety.
In the bathroom, everything should be prepared for the adoption of a hygiene procedure. So, there should be two towels, basins filled with warm water, a shampoo and a comb with soft teeth.
The cat gets used to washing not from how often you expose it to it, but due to the length of the process. At the same time, all actions should be energetic, clear, so that the animal does not have a desire to flee.
Carefully put the cat in a basin. Do not make abrupt and frightening her movements if the animal first takes a bath, because she does not know why you brought her here. With the help of a shower or a ladle, thoroughly wet the wool. It is important to ensure that water does not get into the cat’s eyes and ears. Ears can be slightly covered by hand, pressing them to the head. Then apply shampoo on the wool, foam. The movements should be massaging, soft. It is especially worth washing thoroughly behind the ears, between the legs, along the spine and at the base of the tail. If necessary, pause for the detergent substances to work as much as possible. Then use the bucket or shower again to rinse off the foam. If necessary, this procedure can be repeated.
The cat immediately needs to be wrapped in a towel, wetting the hair. If necessary, then not one. Now is the time to brush your cat’s ears. To do this, use cotton buds, which should carefully handle the inside of the ear.
Some cat owners use a hair dryer to dry their hair, but its sound can annoy the cat or just scare it. Therefore, to dry or not to dry is up to you. It’s better, of course, to comb the cat and lay it in a warm place. It doesn’t matter if she trembles a lot, it’s important not to let her slip through.
It should be noted that short-haired people need a bathing procedure no less than long-haired ones.
