What causes dizziness immediately after sleeping in the morning?

What causes dizziness in the morning

Dizziness is a rather unpleasant sensation that causes discomfort when there is a feeling of rotation of objects around one’s own body, insecurity, unsteadiness when walking, instability, a feeling that “the earth is leaving under your feet”. Moreover, nausea, noise in the head, sometimes vomiting, double vision, sweating, marked general weakness often additionally occur.

The reasons for this condition are many. To determine the treatment tactics and eliminate this syndrome, it is necessary to qualitatively approach the diagnosis and find out the provoking factor of its occurrence.

Dizziness in the morning after sleep is a common occurrence. After waking up and getting out of bed, a sharp imbalance occurs, which is often accompanied by darkening in the eyes or flickering of “flies”, nausea, sensation of heat, sweating.

Reasons why you may feel dizzy after sleeping in the morning

Some of the causes of morning vertigo (from Lat. Vertigo – dizziness) are harmless and do not require medical attention. It can be:

  • uncomfortable head position during sleep or too high or hard pillow;
  • pregnancy;
  • overwork or lack of sleep;
  • poor nutrition, provoking the occurrence of hypoglycemia (a decrease in blood glucose).

These causes are easily eliminated and do not require medical treatment.

But if you are concerned about constant dizziness in the morning and at the same time it is accompanied by other symptoms (headache, nausea and / or vomiting, fever, noise, ringing in the ears, head, darkening in the eyes, loss of consciousness, fluctuation in blood pressure), you should immediately contact to the doctor.

The most common cause of morning wartigo is vertebral artery syndrome . This pathology often occurs against the background of degenerative-dystrophic changes in the cervical spine (protrusion, herniated discs, spondylosis, spondylarthrosis, congenital malformations of the spinal canal or vertebrae). In this case, compression of the vertebral arteries in the transverse processes of the vertebrae occurs and blood flow is disturbed. But the cause may also be the problem with the vessels themselves: atherosclerosis, vasoconstriction, anomaly in the development and course of the vessel itself.

In any case, the blood circulation of the brain is disturbed and oxygen starvation of its posterior parts occurs. A provoking factor in the appearance of vertebral artery syndrome is a sharp change in the position of the head (tilts, turns), which is usually inherent during awakening.

If you do not pay attention to this pathology in time, an acute violation of cerebral circulation can occur, which often leads to disability. Therefore, in order to timely diagnose and remove the occurrence of complications, it is necessary to carry out:

  1. Dopplerography of the neck vessels (find out the degree of hemodynamic disturbance and the percentage of narrowing of the vertebral arteries).
  2. MRI of the cervical spine – to identify pathologies of the intervertebral discs and congenital malformations of the spinal canal.
  3. A blood test for a lipid profile and PTI (allows you to determine the level of cholesterol and “bad” fatty acids, as well as the level of blood coagulation).

Prevention and treatment for dizziness in the morning after sleep

Prevention and treatment of morning dizziness with vertebral artery syndrome are reduced to eliminating the cause. First of all, this is the treatment of spinal problems: in the acute period, the appointment of NSAIDs, B vitamins, muscle relaxants, drugs that improve blood circulation. After – physiotherapy aimed at relaxing the back muscles and removing muscle constriction. This can be electrophoresis with antispasmodics, magnetotherapy, amplipulse. Massage of the cervical-collar zone is also effective. Do not forget about physiotherapy exercises, which is a preventive method in the occurrence of exacerbations and complications.

Therefore, if you: feel dizzy in the morning, there is an unpleasant discomfort in the cervical-occipital region, headache, nausea, imbalance, darkening in the eyes, most likely you have vertebral artery syndrome. Contact your doctor immediately and undergo timely specialized diagnostics and therapy.
